An Accurate Census Count Could Mean More Money for Upton and Weston County

Friday, September 20, 2019

The 2020 census could result in the federal government directing more funds towards Upton and Weston County. That’s because for every person missed in the census, a community loses around $1,800 per year until the next census. Not everyone was counted in the 2010 census and so for ten years, Weston County has received less than we could have in federal dollars. As a community member, you can help to ensure we receive every dollar possible by responding to the census takers, or by becoming a census worker.

The federal government disburses $675 billion per year to local communities. Those funds are used to pay for schools, hospitals, roads, vital programs and grants that can help with things like economic development. The government uses a headcount-based formula when determining how much money to send to specific communities. Understandably, if fewer people are counted, it will appear that less people will be driving on the roads, going to school, etc., and therefore, the community will receive less in funding.

An accurate census is also important for political representation. Every ten years, the results of the census are used to reapportion the House of Representatives, determining how many seats each state gets. The state of Wyoming also uses this information to determine redistricting for the state legislature.

Private Businesses Use Census Data As Well

For the future of Upton and Weston County, it is critical that we have an accurate census where every person is counted. Doing so will help us in our efforts to attract new businesses and development to our area. Since site selectors, developers and investors look at census data when determining which communities to invest in, we need to put our best foot forward and demonstrate the amount of opportunity here.

Get Involved

You can make a difference in the future of Weston County by actively participating in the census. We need workers to apply, and job applications are already being accepted. Next, we need you to encourage friends and family to respond to the census and respond yourself. These small steps can make a huge difference in the future funding coming into our community so make a commitment to get involved today!
