Upton is a family oriented, pleasant place to live with five churches within the community and a Community Center. In 2010 a major downtown renovation was completed that included new pavement, sidewalks, decorative lighting and planters to give the downtown area a much needed facelift. We have a beautiful park located in the center of town. There is an outdoor swimming pool that is open daily from June through August. A branch of the Weston County Public Library is located in Upton. Upton also has a 9 hole golf course located at the edge of town, complete with a club house that serves food and drinks that is open from May through September.
Outdoor recreation opportunities abound in the areas surrounding Upton. There is public land located just outside our backdoor for snowmobiling, ATV riding and hiking. Keyhole Reservoir is located approximately 30 minutes from Upton where fishing, boating and camping are available. Hunting is a big draw to the area, with plentiful opportunities to hunt antelope, deer, elk, turkey and other birds and small game.
Upton is part of the Weston County School District #7. Upton has a K-8 elementary/middle school that was built in 1993. The Upton High School was built in 2002. During the 2010-2011 school year, Upton had 264 students in grades K-12. The average class size is 17.3 students. Upton's graduation rate was 93.5%. Weston County School District #7 has consistently met adequate yearly progress as required by the No Child Left Behind Act. Upton schools perform well on the state proficiency tests given to students each year.
The national recession has affected the workforce in North East Wyoming. Weston's County's current unemployment rate is 5.9% as of September 2009, which remains low compared to the national rate, however the region has experienced significant layoffs in the methane industry.
Upton is fortunate to have an abundance of affordable energy. The Town of Upton provides its residents and businesses with electricity service, water, sewer and sanitation service. Source Gas provides natural gas service within the Town of Upton. Black Hills Power provides electricity in the city limits. Powder River Energy provides electric service in rural Weston County as well as the Upton Regional Industrial Site. This industrial rate is usually 30% less than anywhere else in the nation. Private propane providers and sanitation services are available outside the city limits.
