Eastern Wyoming College to unveil new $23 million technical education center

Eastern Wyoming College in Torrington will unveil a $23 million, 69,000-square-foot facility.

The new Career and Technical Education Center will serve a number of the school’s needs, including welding and its new barbering program. It was approved by the Community College Commission and received a $20 million appropriation from the Legislature in 2014. Later that year, Goshen County voters passed a bond to provide an additional $3 million.

“As the economy in Wyoming has changed, we felt one of the things we needed to change was our workforce development piece,” said Lesley Travers, the new president of EWC. She said the facility fit in with Gov. Matt Mead’s broader plans for diversifying the economy.

The new facility will help the college grow its enrollment — reaching across Wyoming and into neighboring states — as a “premier welding college,” she said. The building can accommodate more than 60 welding students, and “no other program (in the state) has this kind of capacity.”

In addition to welding and barbering, the school’s machine tool technology, cosmetology, health technology and certified nursing assistant programs will be housed in the new facility.
